Building or growing a group practice? Talk to an Expert

Not your typical CPA firm

Built specifically for group practice therapy owners.

Flax CPA gives you a proactive financial system to step into—not a reactive relationship where you have to initiate the work, chase communication, or wonder what your CPA is doing all year.

Why we started

Small business owners deserved a better experience.

Flax CPA began with a simple belief: small business owners deserved better than the normal accounting model. We entered the business to disrupt the once-a-year, deadline-driven relationship and create an experience built around responsiveness, clarity, education, and useful guidance.

We later brought that approach directly to the private practice space. Group therapy practices have distinct financial questions—from hiring and clinician compensation to payroll, cash flow, and sustainable growth. By understanding that world and handling the underlying work together, we can be more than a tax preparer. We can be a steady financial partner for the decisions owners make throughout the year. Those decisions do not stop at the practice door: owner compensation, taxes, and cash flow shape what the business can provide for the owner and their family.

A system already in motion

Proactive by design—not reactive by default.

Most owners are used to initiating every conversation: asking whether the books are done, wondering what to pay in taxes, or reaching out only after a decision has already been made. That puts the burden of managing the accounting relationship back on the owner.

With Flax, recurring bookkeeping, payroll, estimates, tax planning, nexus reviews, and scheduled guidance create a year-round rhythm. The work happening under one roof gives our team the context to raise questions, actively look for tax-saving opportunities, and help you plan earlier. We also explain what we see and why it matters, so you are never asked to follow advice you do not understand.

The relationship matters

What changes when your CPA relationship becomes proactive?

Traditional relationships vary, but many are centered around tax deadlines and owner-initiated questions. This is the experience Flax CPA is intentionally designed to change.

Comparing specialist accounting options

Feature lists can look similar. The service model is where differences appear.

Heard and GreenOak both specialize in private-practice accounting. The right fit depends on how much technology, hands-on execution, live access, and embedded advisory support you want.

Software-led platform

When comparing Flax CPA and Heard

Heard describes itself as financial management software with access to bookkeeping and tax professionals. Its public terms say financial advisory is an add-on and that it does not support practices with multiple owners.

Flax is designed as a human-led advisory relationship for growing group practices, with a dedicated Tax Manager, specialist support, and business guidance inside the standard monthly subscription.

Tiered specialist firm

When comparing Flax CPA and GreenOak

GreenOak's public packages offer several service tiers. Its site describes tax preparation and 1099 preparation as separate optional engagements and describes payroll as a process the client runs with GreenOak's support.

Flax brings tax-return preparation and a clearly defined payroll-administration process under the same monthly subscription as bookkeeping, tax planning, and growth guidance. Owners run payroll in Gusto while Flax supports setup, filings, new-hire reporting, and year-end forms.
